Virtuosity, are we doing the common, uncommonly well? Let’s get back to basics.

July 14, 2015Kim RussellCrossfit, Fitness, Tips, Training

Let’s get back to basics.

How did we learn to run? We walked first. But how did we learn to walk? We had to crawl. Through each one of these movements, we had to become better at one before we could learn the next.

The definition of virtuosity by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is, great technical skill (as in the practice of a fine art).

So what does that mean to us? Do we need to start picking up a brush to paint like Picasso? No. We need to be more efficient.

We need to look at everything that we do and become the most efficient beast possible!

Economy of motion, dictates that there is no wasted energy. Doing the same movement or holding position over and over again as perfect as possible.

When you study any of the greatest athletes of our time: Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Rich Froning, you’ll see they have something in common despite doing different sports! They are all extremely efficient!

Watch any of their old tapes or training videos or games and competitions. They have perfect position because they practice moving efficiently and effectively every time and they do not settle for inefficiency.

They do not look tired because for one, they are not tired, and two, they have become so efficient at the basic movements that it makes everything else less complicated.

If you need proof, just look at their track records.

Michael Jordan has won one NCAA championship, six NBA Championships, and two Olympic Gold medals playing alongside the famed “Dream Team.”

Michael Phelps has won a total of twenty-two Gold Medals in the Olympics becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time.

Rich Froning has won four CrossFit Games titles making him the fittest man alive and he did that consecutively, four years in a row.

All of these men made what they do commonly, uncommonly well. They became stronger at all the basic movements, making the more advanced movements their new basic movements.

Now, take a look at your own movements.  Do you hit your lifts with precision every time?  Could you improve your positioning to make your lift more effective and thus allow you to lift more weight.  If you’re being honest with yourself, you’ll know that there is always room for improvement!  We want to help you on the path to becoming more awesome.

This Saturday, July 18, 2015, Outlier CrossFit will be hosting a back to basics course from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. We will be going over the essential barbell movements in CrossFit to find ways to help everyone become more efficient at executing them and practicing them as close to perfect as possible. This will be the first in a series of clinics that we will be hosting for our members to help make YOU more efficient.  During a class we don’t always have as much time as we would like to breakdown all of the components of the lifts and review them with as much repetition as we would like.  Saturday will be the perfect opportunity to just that!  We hope to see you there.  There is NO CHARGE for this back to basics seminar and you are welcome to bring a friend!
