Our annual intra-gym competition, the Outlier Civil War, is returning! Mark you calendars for September 26th – October 10th, we will be back in action for the best competition of the year. Things will be different this time around. It won’t be a one day free-for-all as in years past…we will spread the competition out over five days. This will allow us to keep individual event participation to a reasonable size considering the 2020 COVID world we live in, but still allow us to be as inclusive as possible to all of our members.
This will be the 5th installment of very unique community competition here at Outlier. The event is open to current members of Outlier Athletics only. Participants split in to large teams (8-12 people) and compete in a wide variety of events. This is an all-inclusive event, each participant, no matter their experience or ability level, will equally contribute to their teams success.
In years past this has been one day competition with 8-10 events lasting all day. This year, we will split the events up to span 5 days: 3 Saturdays, and 2 mid-week days. This will keep the event sizes down, and allow flexibility in scheduling participants for each event. The competition will abide by current state/county mandates and social distancing requirements.
- Day 1 – Saturday 9/26
- Day 2 – Wednesday 9/30
- Day 3 – Saturday 10/3
- Day 4 – Wednesday 10/7
- Day 5 – Saturday 10/10
Saturday events will take place from approximately 8am – 11am. Wednesday events will just be the regular class workout of the day, you will be able to complete the event at whatever normal class that you would attend that day. Participants are not required (nor expected) to be in attendance on each of the 5 days. Coaches will work with their team to assign athletes to workouts on days that fit in their schedule, doing their best to evenly distribute their athletes throughout the events.
Registration for the 2020 Civil War is open! Price is $30. Follow the steps below to register for the event. Registration is due by end of day Sunday 9/20.

A1 = athlete 1 (male or female)

Day 1 – Saturday September 26th
7-rep max front squat (from floor)
1a) Sum of male lifts (per team)
1b) Sum of female lifts
1-rep max bench press
2a) Sum of male lifts

1-rep max deadlift

Teams shall choose 6 lifters to represent their team (3 male and 3 female). Each lifter will perform all 3 lifts.
4 athletes (1 from each team) lift at once on two separate “platforms”, lifting every 2:00 (approx). Athletes will declare the weight of their lift, the bar will be loaded, then they will lift. The same order will be maintained all day and will be determined by random draw. The bar will not be loaded progressively like at a real lifting meet.
7:30am: Gym opens for athlete setup and warmup.
8:30am: Male front squat begins
9:00am: Female front squat begins
9:30am: Male bench press begins
10:00am: Female bench press begins
10:30am: Male deadlift begins
11:00am: Female deadlift begins
Day 2 – Wednesday September 30th

Event 5 – Running and Rowing Relay
Participants (each team): 2 male, 2 female
F1 – 500m row, 400m run
M1 – 500m row, 400m run
F2 – 400m run, 500m row
M2 – 400m run, 500m row
Stage rowers in the front parking lot. (approximately in front of the Outlier front door). Run will start at the rowers and finish at approximately the handicap sign post (for a long straight-away finish).
Event 6 – Sandbag and Sled Relay
Participants: 2 male, 2 female
M1 – 25m sandbag-over-shoulder toss, 25m sandbag carry, 175m sled push (100# bag, 1 plate sled)
F1 – 25m sandbag-over-shoulder toss, 25m sandbag carry, 175m sled push (70# bag, 0 plate sled)
M2 – 25m sandbag-over-shoulder toss, 25m sandbag carry, 175m sled push (150# bag, 2 plate sled)
F2 – 25m sandbag-over-shoulder toss, 25m sandbag carry, 175m sled push (100# bag, 1 plate sled)
Starting line is in the front parking lot on the blue line (aligns with the bay door). Sandbags and sleds will be staged at the starting line. Athletes will toss their sandbag 25m down the parking lot, then carry it back (bearhug style). Athletes will then push their sled around the building (clockwise). When they finish their lap, the next athlete will go.
Event 7 – Squat & Carry Relay
A1 – 30 air squat step-over-barbell, 175m farmer carry (2 x 53/35)
A2 – 30 air squat jump-over-barbell, 175m farmer carry (2 x 70/53)
A3 – 30 air squat step-over-barbell, 175m cross-body carry (2 x 35/26)
A4 – 30 air squat jump-over-barbell, 175m cross-body carry (2 x 53/35)
A5 – 30 air squat step-over-barbell, 100m suitcase carry (105/70)
A6 – 30 air squat jump-over-barbell, 100m suitcase carry (155/105)
